Recognising that remuneration is a core driver for employees, we regularly survey the market, benchmark key roles and use independent market advice to ensure that our remuneration approach is attracting and retaining the people we need at AGL. In a major review this year we assessed and benchmarked more than 70 key roles with the input from an independent remuneration specialist.

Our remuneration system includes an attractive short and long-term incentive program for our senior leaders and a short-term incentive for our middle and emerging leaders, with delivery based on the company’s achievement of pre-set performance targets. Currently, 45% of AGL’s employees are eligible for a short-term incentive. This year we refreshed both incentive programs to strengthen the link between delivery against AGL’s strategy and desired culture, and reward for that performance.

This year we redefined the desirable behaviours for our business, as foundation planks for articulating how we aspire to work, lead, recruit and reward at AGL.  From here, our next step is to redefine the company values underpinning these behaviours, to give all employees a clear compass by which to work.

Our recognition and reward program provides a range of tools which leaders are encouraged to access to acknowledge the contributions of their employees including electronic ‘thank you’ cards, ‘nice one’ gift vouchers and our Winning Ways awards program, now in its 6th year, which recognises major achievements and contributions. This year 86 employees received a monthly Winning Ways award. A refresh of the overall program will strengthen and extend our capability to reward the efforts of employees who deliver against AGL’s strategy and desired culture. From October leaders will have access to a suite of updated tools to encourage them to recognise and reward the contributions of their employees in ways that are appropriate, impactful and timely.

In August this year, as an outcome of our ongoing relationship with WWF-Australia, we recognised the talents and contributions of six of our future leaders by funding and supporting their attendance at a 7 day ‘eco-experience’ in remote North Queensland, to assist in conservation activities for the marine turtle, whose future is threatened by climate change.
