Strategy: Help customers make better choices for their home and environment. To ensure that our green product offerings are competitive and efficient, we have updated our products. The revised suite of products available still reflect the same objective: allow customers to choose about their contribution to greenhouse gas emission reductions.

Renewable electricity options for our residential customers

AGL now has three GreenPower accredited products available to residential customers. All of these products are sourced from 100% renewable energy. The products are:

  • AGL Green Energy™ - Customers who purchase AGL Green Energy have 100% of their energy consumption matched with energy from Government-accredited renewable sources.
  • AGL Green Living™ - Customers that purchase AGL Green Living pay a small premium each week to have 20% of their energy consumption matched with energy from Government-accredited renewable sources. The remaining 80% is matched with energy sourced from non-accredited renewable sources.
  • AGL Green Spirit - Customers that purchase AGL Green Spirit pay a small premium each week to have 10% of their energy consumption matched with energy from Government-accredited renewable sources. The remaining 90% is matched with energy sourced from non-accredited renewable sources.

All of these products are GreenPower accredited. The GreenPower tick means the government has verified that the renewable energy sold is supporting the growth of the renewable energy industry.

Renewable electricity options for our commercial and industrial customers

For our major industrial and commercial customers, we offer both AGL Green Energy™ and an additional product, AGL Green Balance™. This product is certified by the Australian Greenhouse Office. Customers who purchase AGL Green Balance™ have their emissions ‘offset’ through landfill gas flaring activities financed by AGL.

Green product sales

AGL has had a successful year selling green electricity products. The number of residential customers purchasing GreenPower accredited AGL products remained steady at 24,326 as at June 2007. While we did not achieve our target published in last years Sustainability Report of 30,000 customers, we have renewed our focus on increasing sales over the coming year. Over the next 18 months, AGL will work towards increasing our share of the renewable energy market to match our overall electricity
market share.

Business response to GreenPower is strong, with AGL Green Energy business customer numbers growing from 7,265 at end June 2006 to 8,793 at end June 2007.

In the 2006/07 financial year, total AGL Green Balance™ sales were 25,467 MWh. We did not meet our target for AGL Green Balance™ sales of 30,000 MWh in the major industrial and commercial customer market.  We will continue to work with our industrial and commercial customers on providing the most effective green electricity and offset products.

Residential energy efficiency

AGL is continuing with initiatives commenced in previous years. Energy efficiency advice is available through an interactive tool on the AGL website and AGL Energy Shops continue to promote efficient appliances. Customers are able to view the greenhouse gas emissions associated with their energy consumption as a result of information provided on their individual bill.
